Taipei - DPU Visit

I was recently in Taipei attending a meeting of the Democratic Pacific Union. This is an organization that promotes democratic government around the Pacific Rim.  It was the first meeting of its sort for me and I was impressed with the discussion and debate among the delegates. Two issues stuck in my mind and brought home to me the reality of our planet.
First, the leader of the Fijian house was at the meeting. He left Fiji on the Thursday and only became aware of a coupe by the military when he reached the airport. He was allowed to leave for Taipei. Subsequently he learned that the military government would not allow him to return. His family was caught in Fiji, while he was caught in Taipei with no money or resources. Democracy in Fiji was non existent.  How fortunate we are to live in this wonderful country we call Canada. While our politics sometimes can get acrimonious, we continue to be a bastion of democracy and a beacon for those who wish to follow the democratic path.
The second issue involves what is undoubtedly the most important worry to Canadians.  The environment.  How would you like to be the government leader of Tuvalu?  This country’s highest point is 5 meters above sea level.  It is entirely possible that within a short period of time, this nation of 11,800 will be submerged. To those who continue to deny climactic change this fact should cause them to delve deeper into this global problem. While Canada will certainly not be submerged I would ask all Canadians to consider how their lives will be affected.
I wish to thank all of those who have taken time to read and comment on the blog. Best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season and a prosperous and safe New Year.
